Starting Oct. 1, the Beaverton City Library Young Adult Division and the Beaverton Library Foundation will accept submissions for the creative writing contest. Participants, grades 6-12, can submit work to the Main Library or the Murray-Scholls Branch.

"Throughout the year our library does a wonderful job involving the youth," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "It's so important that we give our youth a chance to excel outside of school. This contest challenges our youth academically and recognizes their hard work."

Participants may submit up to three stories, each with no more than a 1,000 words. There will be $100, $50, and $25 prizes for the top three winners in both the middle school and high school divisions. The winners will be announced on Friday, Nov. 7.

Participants are divided into two divisions, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. The participants must submit a story based on the following prompts:

Middle School Prompt - Grades 6-8:
Pick up a random object in the room where you are sitting and write a short story from the point of view of this object.

High School Prompt - Grades 9-12:
Overhear a random snippet of a conversation--it could be on the bus, on the street, at a store or anywhere. Use this snippet as a prompt to write a short story.

Entry forms with full guidelines will be available at the main library and Murray-Scholls Branch as well as online at www.BeavertonLibrary.org/teens in the events and contests section.

"This writing contest gives teens the opportunity to express their creative side," said Abigail Elder library director. "This experience allow teens to have their work read by the community. I look forward to reading the winning submissions and seeing what everyone comes up with."
