Shooting Suspect Caught While Walking In Front Of Police Station

Gresham, Ore. – On Sept. 4, 2014, Devon Campbell-Williams, 25, of Gresham, was shot in the neck during the middle of the day near the 800 block of SE 190th Ave. The suspect fled the scene and the victim was transported to the hospital. Gresham Detectives and the East Metro Gang Enforcement Team later identified the suspect as Alan J. Bates, 33, of Gresham, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Oct. 11, 2014 at 9:07 p.m., Officer Jason Young was on patrol in the area of NE 181st Ave and NE Glisan St when he spotted Bates walking in front of the Gresham Police Rockwood Office. Bates fled on foot and was captured a short while later by a Gresham Police K9. Bates was booked for an attempted murder warrant as well as for a parole violation warrant for a previous 2005 attempted murder charge in which he shot a different victim multiple times.

This shooting is described as gang related because Bates is a documented Columbia Villa Crip gang member; however it is not evident that the incident leading up to the shooting was gang related.

Gresham Police would like to thank the community for their assistance in the investigation. Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to call the Gresham Police at 503.618.2719.
