During the past week Portland Fire & Rescue crews began two pilot projects that aim to increase community fire safety and awareness.

The first program took firefighters into an after school program at Buckman Elementary School.
On Tuesday afternoon Firefighters paid a visit to Buckman Elementary School. The firefighters began their presentation by teaching the children about smoke alarms and creating a fire escape plan and finished by leading the children in various exercises. This program is intended to increase the children's fire safety knowledge in a fun way.

The second program brought firefighters to a Portland residence.
This afternoon firefighters were at a home in Portland. At the request of the resident firefighters performed a free Home Fire Safety Inspection. Firefighters went over a checklist with the homeowner and looked at things like smoke alarm operation/placement, address visibility, extension cord safety and several other items. The PF&R team also provided the homeowner with fire safety information on things like; what to do in the event of a grease fire, how to use fire extinguishers and the need for carbon monoxide alarms.

Be on the lookout for these programs in your neighborhood and if you have questions or are interested in scheduling a free Home Fire Safety Inspection call PF&R at (503)823-3847 or Email us at homesafetycheck@portlandoregon.gov
