Music in Small Spaces, sponsored by the city and the Beaverton Arts Commission, presents "An Afternoon of Irish Music" on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Beaverton City Library Auditorium (12375 SW 5th Street).

Eliot Grasso, with guitarist Glen Waddell, will perform a family concert of Irish music, which includes reels, jigs, hornpipes and slow airs. Between pieces, the duo will explain the music and tell stories about how the pieces were created.

"Thanks to events like Music in Small Spaces, Beaverton is becoming well known for its arts and culture," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "These unique musical offerings are a fun and informative way for families and friends to spend an afternoon together."

Grasso is on the faculty at the University of Oregon. His dissertation, Melodic Variation in the Instrumental Dance Music Tradition of Ireland, was awarded the University of Oregon's Special Award for Outstanding Ethnomusicology-Related Dissertation. He was also awarded the Thelma Adamson Prize in Ethnomusicology for his research on cognition and melodic variation, and was honored with Goucher College's Dean Van Meter Alumni Fellowship to conduct performance practice research in Ireland.
Grasso has taught and performed traditional Irish music extensively in North America and Europe, and has played for the National Endowment for the Arts Awards, the National Heritage Awards, Glasgow's International Piping Festival, Piping Live!, and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
