Hillsboro, Oregon - Early Saturday evening four families were displaced by a kitchen fire that started in one of the apartments at the twelve unit complex at 1719 SE Oak Street. The fire was reported to 9-1-1 dispatchers just before 7:00pm and the first engine company to arrive from the Main Station #1 found flames coming from the roof of the single story, multi family building. When firefighters entered the apartment where the kitchen fire was reported they found that the fire had traveled up the wall and into the attic space. Additional firefighters worked on venting the roof to access and extinguish the fire in the attic. Firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes of their arrival.
Witnesses told investigators that the fire started in a pot on the stove. When the resident discovered the fire, she left the apartment to get the fire extinguisher from the laundry room just outside. A nearby neighbor heard the smoke alarm sounding and brought a fire extinguisher when he came to investigate. The two successfully put out the fire on the stove, but not before the fire had entered the attic space.
The interior of the apartment where the fire started suffered smoke and water damage. As a result of the heat and water in the attic space and potential damage to electrical wiring the power to the building and all four apartments was turned off.
The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the four families with temporary housing. A total of nine adults and eight children were displaced.
Hillsboro Fire Investigators determine the cause of the fire to be accidental.
Twenty personnel from Hillsboro Fire & Rescue responded to the fire. No injuries were reported.
Hillsboro Fire and Rescue reminds citizens to evacuate at the first sign of smoke or fire and call 9-1-1 once safely outside. And once outside, don't go back in.
