WILSONVILLE, OR -- For the 17th consecutive year, the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has conferred the "Distinguished Budget Presentation Award" to the City of Wilsonville Finance Department for the fiscal year 2014-15 budget document.
In notifying the City about the award, the GFOA stated that the award was given specifically to cities like Wilsonville that "Pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America."
The award represents a significant achievement by the Finance Department and reflects the commitment of the City and Finance staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting standards. The GFOA award recognizes that the Finance Department has met or surpassed nationally recognized accounting guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines define how successful the City's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communication device.
"We are proud of the accomplishments our Finance Department has achieved over the years," said Mayor Knapp. "This award shows that City staff members place a high priority on presenting public finance issues in a transparent and understandable fashion."
A Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation was awarded to Assistant Finance Director Cathy Rodocker for being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. Other Finance Department employees that assisted in preparing the report are Finance Operations Manager Keith Katko, Accountant Vania Heberlein and Administrative Assistant Kourtni Kersey.
The City's newly hired Finance Director, Susan Cole stated, "I am excited to join and lead this outstanding team of finance professionals who have an impressive reputation for top-quality financial reporting and budgeting. I look forward to working with all of them to continue this notable record of achievement."
The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA's best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.
