Tonight at 10:16 PM Portland Firefighters were called to a house at 6616 N Albina Ave. Calls to 911 indicated that a fire had started around a ceiling fan in a bathroom. Fire crews arrived and found flames and smoke coming from the attic area of a single story duplex. Firefighters began searching the structure for occupants and working to access the fire.

The homes occupants were outside and no injuries were associated with this fire. Firefighters cut away portions of the roof and worked from the inside to gain access to the fire. The fire was extinguished and fire crews worked to remove insulation and other burning material from the attic. This fire appears to be related to the bathroom fan, damage estimates aren't yet available.

At 10:59 PM, while crews were completing their work on the Albina Avenue fire another house fire came in at 3633 SE Schiller. Firefighters arrived and found heavy fire in the 1.5 story homes garage and in the first floor of the house itself. Firefighters encountered very cluttered conditions inside and around the house. The homes power line had also fallen creating an additional hazard for firefighters.

Firefighters began fighting the fire and searching the house for residents. The occupants weren't at home and no injuries were associated with this fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire and began the overhaul process. Searching for and removing all burning material will be very time and labor intensive due to the heavy clutter. This fires cause and damage estimates are not yet available.

There are four important things you can do to reduce your risk of injury from a home fire:

1. Make sure your home has properly installed and working smoke alarms.

2. Plan and practice a fire escape plan.

3. In case of a fire, get out and stay out. Going back into a burning home can be deadly.

4. Keep your home clean and organized, this will decrease the likelihood and severity of a fire.
