###
Shortly after 12:30 am Clackamas Firefighters were dispatched to the Lake Crest Apartments in Milwaukie on several reports of a fire in the building. Firefighters arrived and reported heavy smoke from a lower level unit and quickly went to work evacuating building occupants and extinguishing the fire. Fire Crews were able to evacuate dozens of people from the building who were unaware that a fire was burning and that they were in danger. Several people who were evacuated had to be physically carried from the building by firefighters. Three people were injured and required medical attention and transport to area hospitals, one person was treated on scene and sadly, one individual died as a result of this fire.
The fire was brought under control in 32 minutes with a second alarm assignment. Fire Investigators are currently on scene and will be working to determine the fire cause and amount of damage. Names of patients transported and fire victim are not available. The Red Cross is on scene and working to provide shelter for those who were evacuated from their apartments.
While it is not known if a working smoke alarm was present in the apartment of origin, Clackamas Fire would like to remind people to install a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside of every sleeping area.
