Elderly Man Rescued From House Fire

ELDERLY MAN RESCUED FROM HOUSE FIRE

News Release from Clackamas Fire Dist. #1
Posted on FlashAlert: September 30th, 2014 9:54 AM
Shortly after midnight Firefighters were dispatched to the Shadowbrook Mobile Home Park on a report of a residential fire. Fire Crews arrived to find smoke from the mobile home, a car in the driveway and lights on in the residence. The first due company went into rescue mode and quickly made entry into the home to find fire on a wall and an elderly man yelling for help. Firefighters were able to simultaneously extinguish the fire, locate the victim who had become disoriented by the smoke and remove him from the building. The victim was transferred to an American Medical Response (AMR)Ambulance and transported to an area hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. The victim has since been released from the hospital.

The victim reported making a fire in his wood stove prior to going to bed and was awoken a short time later by a smoke alarm, alerting him to the fact that there was a fire. The man briefly attempted to extinguish the fire but it began to spread quickly. In this case a working smoke alarm and the quick actions of firefighters contributed to a positive outcome. This is the second incident in three days in which Clackamas Firefighters have rescued one of our community members from a residential fire.

This incident proves that working smoke alarms do save lives and provide early notification to residents. Often times it is the toxic smoke and gases that cause people to become disoriented and not able to escape their home in the event of a fire. Clackamas Fire would like to remind people to install a working smoke alarm on every level of their home and outside of all the sleeping areas.
