This evening at 7:18 PM Portland Firefighters were called to a house at 1500 SW Harrison Street. When firefighters from Engine 15 (Portland Heights) arrived they found fire in the attic of the residence. The occupant was already outside of the home and was safe.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in the attic and began looking for any additional fire. Incident Commanders determined that the fire was completely extinguished and a Fire Investigator was called to determine the cause of the fire and to estimate damages. No injuries were associated with this fire. This release will be updated with cause and damage information when it becomes available. If pictures become available they will also be added to this release.

Portland Fire and Rescue reminds residents:

In the U.S., someone dies in a house fire every three hours. (United States Fire Administration [USFA])

- If there's a fire, get out and stay out. Never go back into a burning home.

- Children make up 15% to 20% of all fire deaths (USFA). Teach children never to hide if there's a fire, but to get out and stay out.

There are three important things you can do to reduce your risk of injury from a home fire:

1. Make sure your home has properly installed and working smoke alarms.

2. Plan and practice a fire escape plan.

3. In case of a fire, get out and stay out. Going back into a burning home can be deadly.
