At 4:57 this morning Firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke in the area of Molalla Avenue and May St. in Oregon City. Firefighters arrived to 1015 Molalla Avenue to find heavy brown and black smoke coming from a large commercial building and quickly went to work to locate and extinguish the fire. Approximately 40 minutes into the incident a back draft occurred, causing two firefighters to be thrown 10-15 feet from the building. One Gladstone firefighter was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital as a result of the back draft with minor burns. This firefighter has since been treated and released. The extent of injuries to the firefighters involved was limited due to the protective equipment that is worn at all fire scenes. A second minor injury to a firefighter occurred on the fire scene but was unrelated to the backdraft. This firefighter was treated on scene for a rolled ankle.

The fire was placed under control at 6:44am with assistance from Gladstone Fire, Canby Fire District, Portland Fire Bureau and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. No civilian injuries were reported.

Fire Investigators are on scene and will be conducting interviews and digging through the fire buildings to determine the cause, origin and amount of damage to the building. This investigation is ongoing at this time.
