Gresham, Ore - The Gresham Police Department will be working with the Oregon Department of Transportation and other local agencies for this year's third safety belt blitz campaign. The safety belt blitz campaign begins on August 25 and ends September 7. It is funded by the USDOT's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the emphasis will be on child safety seats, fitting station referrals, cell phone use and speed enforcement.

During June of 2013, a statewide observation survey of seatbelt use in Oregon was conducted and showed that 98.18% of vehicle occupants were using safety belts, which was an all-time high for Oregon. However, those not using restraints that are involved in traffic crashes are much more likely to be injured or killed than those who are property restrained.

In 2012, 997 child passengers under 8 years old were injured or killed in Oregon motor vehicle crashes. At least 12 of these children were completely unrestrained in vehicles. Furthermore, one in three of these children aged 4 to 8 that should have been riding in child safety seats were improperly restrained with an adult belt system. The proper use of child car seats reduces the likelihood of infants under 1 year old from being killed in a crash by 71%. They also reduce the risk of fatal injuries for toddlers aged 1 through 4 by 54%.

Oregon law requires that children less than 40 pounds be restrained in a child seat and children under one year or weighing less than 20 pounds must be restrained in a rear-facing child seat. Children over 40 pounds must be in either a child seat or a booster seat until they reach 4'9" tall AND the seatbelts in the vehicle fit them correctly.

For information about child safety seats, refer to the seat manufacturer's instructions, the vehicle owner's manual, or go to your local child seat fitting station.
