Green power in spotlight at Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days
Fair achieves sustainability goal with help of Blue Sky renewable energy customers
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - For the 10th consecutive year, Pacific Power is joining the celebration of Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days by "greening" the event with Blue Sky renewable energy. The 148th fair will run Aug. 28 through Sept. 1 at the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds.
"The fair is always a time to celebrate what we all share in the community--history, sustainability and a commitment to our future generations," said Bill Clemens, Pacific Power's regional community manager who served on the fair's board for many years. "Sponsoring the concert opening night, the demolition derby and the fair court are all traditions that we enjoy being part of every year. Personally, I am really looking forward to the parade when we rev up our restored 1947 service truck."
Pacific Power's Blue Sky customers help make the festival more eco-friendly by supporting renewable energy from western region wind farms that matches the energy being used to power the event, from lights on the midway to spotlights on the concert stage to powering the Ferris wheel. This year that amounts to 750 blocks (75,000 kilowatt-hours) of Blue Sky, comparable to powering about 58 typical Washington homes for an entire month.
"Sustainability, whether at harvest time or daily energy use year-round, is a key theme for any agricultural fair. The more we can all promote the use and development of renewable energy, the better it will be for the environment and the local economy," said Cory Hewitt, manager of the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds. "We're very pleased to have Pacific Power helping our fair - and our community - to be greener."
There are significant benefits to renewable energy. For example, the green energy supported for the fair helps avoid 93,641 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions- which has the same benefit as not driving nearly 100,824 miles.
"Besides benefiting the environment, renewable power, such as wind, is a growing part of the energy industry that benefits our local community," said Clemens.
Pacific Power customers receive power from its Marengo I and II wind near Dayton, part of the largest utility owned wind fleet in the West.
Pacific Power's 50 local employees reflect a strong partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as well as community organizations. Originally founded in Walla Walla and three other communities 104 years ago, Pacific Power has been providing electrical service and community partnership ever since.
More about Blue Sky:
Enrollment in the Blue Sky program is purely voluntary and more than 800 Walla Walla-area Pacific Power customers are already choosing to go above and beyond through Blue Sky. Blue Sky is a way customers can help encourage even more renewable generation in the western region.
Here is how it works: When customers enroll in Blue Sky, Pacific Power purchases renewable energy certificates from western region renewable energy sources equal to the total level of customer Blue Sky commitment. This guarantees that electricity from these renewable resources is delivered into the regional power pool and helps drive more new renewable energy development in the region. Electricity produced by renewable energy reduces the need for electricity generated from other, nonrenewable sources.
Participation in Blue Sky, for as little as an additional $1.95 per month, provides customers a simple and convenient way to stimulate commercial development of renewable energy in the region and support the construction of smaller, community-based renewable energy projects that can include wind, solar, geothermal, low-emission biomass or other certified renewable energy sources.
Locally, Blue Sky customers helped fund the following projects:
* Whitman College, a 21-kilowatt solar array located on the roof of the Bratton Tennis Center.
* Walla Walla Community College - two solar projects and one wind project - a 75-kilowatt rooftop solar array on the William A. Grant Water and Environmental Center, and a 69-kilowatt solar system atop the roof of the Auto Body Technology Building, made possible by multi-year funding awards to the college. Also two wind turbines are currently being installed on campus and will serve as centerpieces of the college's Renewable Energy Park. These installations provide an educational tool for teachers, students and other community members.
