On August 11, 2014 at approximately 2:28 AM, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) Deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic crash on SE Lusted Rd at SE Hudson Rd, an unincorporated area of Clackamas County north of the City of Sandy. Other responding agencies included the Sandy Police Department, Sandy Fire Department, and American Medical Response (AMR).

A citizen who lived near the crash called 911 to report the vehicle collided with a tree, was on fire, and carried four passengers including the driver. The citizen quickly reacted and helped one of the back seat passengers out of the vehicle before the fire engulfed the entire vehicle along with the other occupants. The three other occupants were unable to escape the vehicle and were discovered to be dead by first responders.

The injured passenger was flown to a Portland area hospital by the Life Flight Network. The CCSO was later notified by hospital staff that the passenger died as a result of his injuries.

During the citizen's rescue efforts, a small dog escaped the burning vehicle and ran away from the crash scene. The dog was later found by someone standing nearby and was discovered to have suffered burns along with other possible injuries. The dog was rushed by a CCSO Deputy to an emergency veterinary hospital and its medical condition is unknown at this time. However, a reading of the dog's microchip provided information about its registered owner which is being used to possibly identify at least one of the vehicle occupants.

The Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office and CCSO are still working to identify the victims of the crash. Additionally, the names of the deceased will be withheld until family notifications can be made.

The intersection of SE Lusted Rd and SE Hudson Rd will remain closed until the CCSO and Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office have completed the scene investigation. Citizens who routinely travel through the intersection are asked to find an alternate route for this morning's commute.

Please reference CCSO case number 14-21796.
