Oregon State Police (OSP) arrested a 35-year old man following an injury hit & run traffic crash Tuesday morning on Highway 219 south of Newberg. The suspect driver was found in his crashed vehicle after continuing from the scene before stopped east of Highway 219 on Champoeg Road N E.

On August 19, 2014 at 5:52 a.m., a 1997 Honda Accord driven by FRED SAUERMANN, age 40, from Independence, was traveling southbound on Highway 219 near milepost 24 when a northbound 2013 Toyota van crossed the centerline and struck the Honda's left side. The van continued northbound without stopping at the scene.

An OSP trooper arrived on scene at approximately 6:08 a.m., contacting the Honda's driver who was injured as Newberg-area fire and medical personnel also arrived. The trooper checked the area north of the crash scene and found the suspect vehicle 8 minutes later about a half mile away where it stopped east of Highway 219 on Champoeg Road NE.

Subsequent investigation led the trooper to arrest the van's driver, RAMON OROS BARRERA, age 35, from Cornelius. OROS BARRERA was lodged in the Marion County Jail on the following charges:

* Felony Hit & Run - Injury
* Reckless Driving
* Assault in the Fourth Degree
* Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended

OROS BARRERA was also cited for Failure to Install Ignition Interlock Device.

SAUERMANN was transported to Oregon Health & Science University for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released.
