This afternoon after 3pm, firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire in the 8300 block of SW Iowa Hill Road. Crews arrived shortly there after to find a grass and brush fire on a hill near a house. Crews in 4wheel drive brush rigs were back to attack the flames from the bottom and top of the hill, stopping the flames from spreading further. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, and another hour of putting out multiple hot spots that were found in many stumps.

Due to quick thinking of the home owners to call 911, this fire was quickly stopped. The fire threatening to burn a garage, but was stopped. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but appears to be accidental. No property was lost.

The owners are also praised by the layout of their property. They had clear defendable space around their house, meaning if a fire was coming towards their house, firefighters have a better chance of preventing the house from burning.

The Cornelius Fire Department suggest that if you live in a rural area, you should have 30 feet around your home that has no dead vegetation, also any vegetation that is near or against your house and to trim trees so that no limbs are 10 feet from the ground. Additionally for 100 feet away from your house you should keep grass cut short, remove any twigs or leaves and keep spacing between your trees and bushes. Contact your local fire department for specific requirement or additional information on protecting your home.
