The City of Beaverton's Human Rights Advisory Commission (HRAC) will continue its Cultural Conversations series with a multicultural panel representing four communities of color from Oregon. The next Cultural Conversation will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Beaverton City Library (12375 5th Street) in the Cathy Stanton Lobby Conference Room.

The Cultural Conversations series, now in its fourth year, encourages local residents from communities of color to share their experiences with the community.

"Beaverton is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Oregon," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "One in four of our residents was born outside of the United States. This important series encourages our diverse residents to share their voice. By listening and learning, we can move forward together and become an even more welcoming community."

Panelists will include: Zaha Hassan, a Palestinian-American Muslim and founder of Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights; Adam Horbachuk, a resident of Hispanic heritage who recently moved to Beaverton from Springfield, Oregon; Lina Cockrell, a retired financial analyst/contracting officer for the US Bankruptcy Court of Oregon of Filipino background; and, Mark Lewis, an African American Senior Finance Manager at Multnomah County Health Department who has a graduate certificate in Leadership Development for Minority Managers.

"We learn so much when we hear the stories of people from minority populations who have moved to Beaverton," said HRAC Chair, Esther Griffin. "Understanding their experiences and feelings allows us to become better neighbors and strengthens our community. Please join us for this Cultural Conversation."

The commission's regular business meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Cultural Conversation immediately following at 7:30 p.m.

HRAC's mission is to safeguard the rights of all residents and promote mutual understanding. HRAC helps residents and government in the City of Beaverton to embrace and celebrate diversity, eliminate bigotry and enhance a sense of community.
