Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of Monday evening's fatal motorcycle crash in the Veneta area that resulted in the death of an adult male. The victim's name and other information are released in this update.

On May 12, 2014 at approximately 6:20 p.m., Lane County Sheriff's Office requested OSP investigate a fatal motorcycle crash in Veneta. The crash occurred approximately 5:40 p.m. when a 1997 Honda motorcycle operated by ROSS JOHN STANG, age 29, from Veneta, was westbound on Bolton Hill Road near 8th Street. STANG failed to safely negotiate through a right curve, traveled across the eastbound lane and struck a curb. STANG was ejected from the motorcycle.

Despite life saving measures taken by firefighters from Lane Fire Authority. STANG was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a protective helmet.

OSP troopers from the Springfield and Florence offices responded to investigate. Trooper Kyle Bachmeier is the lead investigator.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Lane County Sheriff's Office, Lane Fire Authority, and Lane County Medical Examiner.

OSP, Lane County Sheriff's Office and ODOT remind all drivers and motorcycle operators that May is "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month" in Oregon. According to ODOT, 43 people lost their lives in motorcycle crashes in 2013, down from 51 in 2012. Last year, 73 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes in Oregon were attributed to the motorcyclist committing the primary error leading to the crash.

Additional information and tips is available in ODOT's news release issued earlier this month at http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/ORDOT/bulletins/b64d4b?reqfrom=share.
