Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation, including gathering of information and statements, related to Sunday afternoon's fatal traffic crash on Highway 20 just east of the Santiam Summit in Jefferson County. Information related to the involved persons will be released after next of kin notifications are completed.
Preliminary information indicates on May 18, 2014 at approximately 12:35 p.m, the driver of a 2008 Ford Focus traveling on Highway 20 near milepost 81 lost control on the wet roadway and struck the guardrail on the south side of the highway. The Ford continued into the eastbound lane where it was struck by a 2007 Honda Accord which was struck in the driver's door by a 2009 Toyota sport utility vehicle.
The Honda's driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Numerous other occupants from the involved vehicles were injured, some critical. All injured persons were transported by air and ground ambulances from Sisters and Camp Sherman areas to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.
OSP troopers from Bend, Madras and LaPine offices responded to the scene.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District, ODOT, and medics from a National Guard until traveling through the area.
The highway was closed until injured persons were transported from the scene. One lane in both direction is reported open. Traffic updates TripCheck.com.
