At approximately 9 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014, deputies were dispat ched to a report of a dog stranded at the base of a cliff along the Sandy River. The dog was rescued and safely reunited with its owner.
The dog -- Mazy, 2, a Brittany spaniel mix -- had jumped off of a pontoon boat belonging to Mark Barham. Barham was boating near the rapids on the Sandy River at Dodge Park. Mazy jumped from the boat, navigated the rapids, and went ashore at the base of a cliff underneath the far end of the Pipeline Bridge at Dodge Park.
Barham attempted to rescue the dog several times, but the swift current made a solo rescue operation impossible. Barham called the Sheriff's Office, and the CCSO Marine Unit was dispatched to the scene, soon joined by personnel from the Portland Water Bureau.
Deputies designed a rescue operation. One deputy climbed a ladder to the Pipeline Bridge, crossed the river atop the pipeline, and prepared to rappel down the other side to contact the dog, who was huddling on a sliver of land under the Pipeline Bridge.
As soon as the deputy dropped a rappel line, however, the dog jumped back into the rapid current.
Marine deputies had prepared for this contingency, however -- another deputy was waiting downstream to intercept the dog.
The deputy brought Mazy to shore for an excited reunion with Barham. Barham and Mazy then continued down a less-turbulent part of the Sandy River.
A note to the public: Rivers are running high and fast at this time of year. Please remember to wear a lifejacket -- and consider a lifejacket for your pet if it's joining you on the boat.
Photos from the rescue operation are attached.
