BPA upgrade project will cut electricity to 1,000 Pacific Power customers overnight May 15-16

SHERMAN COUNTY, Oregon--Approximately 1,000 Pacific Power customers in Sherman County, Ore., will experience a seven-hour electricity outage beginning 10:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 while the Bonneville Power Administration works on the transmission system serving the area.. Service should be restored by 5:30 a.m. Friday, May 16.

The resulting outage will affect customers in Wasco, Moro, Biggs Junction, Grass Valley, Kent and surrounding areas. These Pacific Power customers are being notified individually about the outage. They are also being reminded, as a precaution, to unplug any sensitive electronics during the outage and charge their cell phones before the outage or have extra batteries available.

"We have worked with the BPA to have this work done at a time that is the least inconvenient to our customers," said Sheila Holden, regional community manager. "It might be a good idea for customers to use a battery-operated clock or a cell phone alarm, if you have to get up early in the morning,"

Pacific Power encourages customers to prepare in advance for this planned power outage and for any unexpected outages due to severe weather or other causes. Remember to charge your cell phone and/or have extra batteries ready before the outage begins. Because this outage is planned for the middle of the night it's unlikely you will need all the items listed below, but it's always a good idea to assemble a preparedness kit that includes the following items in the event of any type of emergency:

* A flashlight
* Blankets
* Non-perishable foods
* Battery-operated radio and clock
* A manual can opener
* Extra batteries
* bottled water
* First aid kit

Customers with anyone in the home on life-support equipment, must always be sure to have a back-up system and a plan of action in preparation for an outage

"We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers, but for safety reasons the BPA must de-energize our lines while they perform these necessary upgrades to their equipment," said Holden.

Customers with questions about the planned outage can call Pacific Power toll free at 1-888-221-7070. Any outages during that time outside the affected area should continue to be reported to Pacific Power at 1-877-508-5088.
