Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Sunday morning's two vehicle fatal traffic crash along Interstate 84 just west of the Oregon / Idaho border that resulted in the death of one person. The names of the involved drivers and surviving injured passenger will be released later this afternoon.

Preliminary information indicates on March 9, 2014 at approximately 1:59 a.m., a 2007 Pontiac Grand Am driven by a male was eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 377 in the left lane. A 2004 Ford F150 pickup driven by a 17-year old male from Fruitland, Idaho, was eastbound in the right lane passing the Pontiac when the pickup's left side collided into the Pontiac's right side.

Both drivers lost control resulting in the pickup rolling numerous times across the westbound lanes before coming to rest down a grassy embankment on its side. The Pontiac spun around and came to a rest on the right eastbound shoulder.

The pickup's driver was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. The 17-year old female passenger from Payette, Idaho, was not ejected and received non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario. Neither occupant was using safety restraints.

The Pontiac's driver and 3 male passengers were not injured.

OSP troopers from the Ontario Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause and manner of the crash. Speed of the pickup is a contributing factor. Trooper Kevin Harris is the lead investigator. Any witnesses who have not spoken to OSP regarding the investigation are asked to call OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at 800-442-2068 or the Ontario Area Command office (541) 889-6469.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Ontario Police Department, Ontario Fire and Rescue, Treasure Valley Paramedics, and ODOT. Assistance was also provided by Idaho State Police and Idaho Department of Transportation by closing the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 near milepost 3 for about six hours. The eastbound lanes were closed in Oregon for over 2 hours before one lane was open until the scene was cleared about 8:00 a.m.
