WILSONVILLE, OR -- At the March 3, 2014, meeting of the Wilsonville City Council, the Council held a first reading of Ordinance No. 736 that would authorize the City to vacate portions of SW 110th Avenue between SW Mont Blanc and SW Tooze Road in the Villebois area according to the City's Transportation System Pla n and the Villebois Village Master Plan. Major portions of SW 110th Avenue that are being vacated will be converted to park land as shown in the Villebois Village Master Plan. The north-south connectivity of SW 110th Avenue will be replaced by a new segment of SW Villebois Drive North with bike lanes and sidewalks. The City Council voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance that will have a second reading on March 17.
Under New Business, the City Council unanimously agreed to hear an appeal of the Development Review Board (DRB) Panel A's recent denial of the Human Bean's applications for a 450-square-foot coffee kiosk on the corner of SW 95th Avenue and Boones Ferry Road. The hearing will occur at the next City Council meeting on March 17 and will allow evidence and testimony limited to on-site traffic congestion and circulation issues cited by the DRB as reasons to deny the development applications.
During the meeting the City Council heard a presentation from a Wilsonville High School robotics team called "1425 Error Code Xero Robotics." The team strives to learn about engineering, robotics and innovative design by competing in various robotics challenges. The team is preparing to compete in the upcoming Pacific Northwest FIRST District event which will be held at Wilsonville High School on Friday, March 21, 11:30 am to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, March 22, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public. In April, the team hopes to qualify for the District Championships and then perhaps even advance to the National Championships in St. Louis Missouri in late April.
During the meeting, City Council also welcomed a new member of Wilsonville's Police Department, Sergeant Brad O'Neil. Sergeant O'Neil has been with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office for 19 years including 14 years as a full-time police officer. O'Neil is joined by his police dog "Nero," a nine-year-old Shepherd Malinois mix, making up Wilsonville's full-time K9 unit.
During work session prior to the City Council meeting, staff presented a proposed timeline and recommendation to develop a citywide signage and way-finding plan. The purpose of a citywide signage and way-finding plan is to promote a better visitor experience and improve traffic patterns by helping visitors and new residents more easily find their desired destinations and other areas throughout the city. City Council discussed the proposal and supported staff's recommendation to wait to develop the citywide signage and way-finding plan until after completing a strategic branding effort that is expected to be completed later this year.
