GRESHAM, Ore. - Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis will deliver his annual State of the City Address this Thursday, Feb. 13.
The speech, considered one of Gresham's signature civic events, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Gresham High School Auditorium, 1200 N. Main Ave., before an audience of Gresham City Councilors, invited dignitaries, community leaders and residents. The high school is a new location for the speech this year.
This year's speech will focus on the critical future of public safety services in Gresham. With the upcoming expiration of the City's temporary Police, Fire and Parks Fee, the City anticipates placing a five-year funding levy on the May 2014 ballot to support those services, with 95 percent of the revenue going to public safety and 5 percent to parks. Bemis' address will include a challenge for the community to determine its own destiny, collectively choosing to invest in Gresham's future.
"Gresham has arrived at the most important defining moment of our era," Bemis said. "We are unwilling to watch other areas of the region push gang activity and poverty our direction, without assembling the necessary tools to address those issues. Generations before us have pulled together as a community to build this city, and our time has now come to make our own investments."
The event is open to the general public, including a pre-address reception beginning at 6 p.m.
MetroEast Community Media will videotape the event and a speech transcript will be posted at GreshamOregon.gov.
