An adult male is in custody Wednesday after stealing a motorcycle while its owner was at a Wilsonville gas station and then later being involved in a non-injury crash while attempting to elude police officers along Highway 99E near Gervais. He is also suspected of having left another stolen vehicle near the gas station

At 1:19 p.m. deputies with the Wilsonville Police Department responded to a report of a stolen motorcycle taken from the Chevron station located at 25410 SW 95th Avenue in Wilsonville. The owner of the motorcycle had been approached by a man at the gas station who struck up a conversation about his customized 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle. They had moved to a location in front of the business where they continued to talk and the suspect asked if he could sit on the motorcycle. The suspect used this opportunity to drive off on the motorcycle toward the south on Interstate 5.

(See attached photo of the suspect's departure.)

At approximately 1:22 p.m., OSP received simultaneous reports of the motorcycle theft and a citizen's driving complaint of a reckless motorcycle southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 278. The reckless motorcycle's description matched that of the reported stolen motorcycle.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers headed north from Salem to find the stolen motorcycle. At approximately 1:40 p.m., Woodburn police and OSP spotted the stolen motorcycle off Interstate 5 near Highway 214. The motorcycle eluded Woodburn police and was last seen south on Highway 99E.

An OSP Fish & Wildlife trooper was headed northbound on Highway 99E in Gervais with emergency lights and siren activated. At approximately 1:45 p.m., a southbound pickup pulled toward the right shoulder to yield to the oncoming emergency vehicle when the motorcycle collided into the back of the pickup. The motorcycle operator was ejected and taken into custody by OSP and Woodburn police. He was checked at the scene but no injury was found requiring transport to a hospital.

Positive ID of suspect is pending. He is being transported to the OSP Salem Area Command office for follow up before being lodged in jail. Pending charges at this time are Felony Attempt to Elude, UUMV, and Reckless Driving.

Further investigation led deputies from the Wilsonville Police Department to locate a stolen vehicle from Washington State in the parking lot of a restaurant that is adjacent to the gas station. An investigation to determine if this vehicle was left there by the same suspect is underway.
