On Monday February 24, 15 new firefighters were formally sworn in to Clackamas Fire District #1. Today marks day one of the eight week recruit academy for these new firefighters in which they will learn the basic skills required to be a firefighter. Upon completion of this academy, the recruits will continue their training for the remainder of the year, while serving their community and responding to emergencies and calls for service, as a member of an engine company.

Nine of the 15 firefighters were hired with funds awarded to Clackamas Fire as part of a federal SAFER grant. The nine grant funded postions will go direcetly to increasing staffing in the communities of Pleasant Vally, South End Oregon City and one additional community in the sourthern portion of Clackamas Fire's Service area.

Federal Grant Background
SAFER grants (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) assist fire departments by increasing the number of frontline firefighters. The goal is for fire departments to increase their staffing and deployment capabilities thereby enhancing service to the community. The SAFER program is managed and administered by the Federal Emergency Managements Agency's Grant Programs Directorate and supports several specific critical activities: (1) the rehiring of laid-off firefighters, (2) the retention of firefighters facing layoffs, (3) the hiring of new firefighters, and ( 4) the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
