Three Teens Fall Through Ice but Avoid Injury

THREE TEENS FALL THROUGH ICE BUT AVOID INJURY

News Release from Clackamas Fire Dist. #1
Posted on FlashAlert: December 9th, 2013 8:21 PM
Shortly after 5:00pm this evening a homeless Milwaukie man called 911, reporting that he heard two people fall through the ice and scream for help. The reporting party stated he heard several juveniles playing near the water in the Minthorne Natural Area off of 37th Avenue in Milwaukie prior to hearing the calls for help.

Clackamas Firefighters and rescue personnel including those from the Clackamas County Swift Water Rescue Consortium, quickly responded to the scene and performed a hasty search along the bank to rapidly identify if anyone was in trouble. The search turned up evidence that someone had in fact gone in the water but nobody was found. As the incident progressed, information was made available to Milwaukie Police that six juveniles between the ages of 12-13 had been involved in this incident and that three of the teens had actually went onto the ice and fallen through. The teens were able to get out of the water by themselves and left the scene. Milwaukie Police made contact with each of the involved teens to confirm that they were in fact home safe and not still in danger. None of the teens involved were injured or required any medical care.

While this incident had a good outcome it is entirely possible that this could just as easily have been a tragedy. Clackamas Fire would like to remind people to stay away from the water and frozen ponds during these cold periods as the ice can be very fragile and break easily. While these types of ice related incidents are very rare, they are extremely dangerous for people who find themselves as victims as well as the rescuers rendering aid.
