PGE: At about 5 a.m. on Sun., Dec. 8, 2013, a cable failure in an underground vault resulted in the loss of power to a portion of downtown Portland. About 100 PGE customers are affected, including the US Bank Tower and a portion of Pioneer Place as well as various other buildings in the downtown core area. Pioneer Square is not affected. Traffic signals on SW 5th and 6th Avenues at Broadway, Taylor, Alder, Yamhill and Washington streets are affected. Drivers and pedestrians should treat these as four-way stop intersections. TriMet MAX trains are running, but may experience slight delays. The exact cause of the underground cable failure is still under investigation, but restoration work could be time intensive. Crews are working to complete repairs as quickly and safely as possible. PGE will provide updates as more information becomes available, and appreciates customers' and the public's patience as crews work to restore power. Only a portion of the downtown core area is affected. The outage does not extend outside the core area. The Pearl District, Brewery District, Old Town, and other portions of downtown are not affected. Shops and the cinema in the Rotunda Building at Pioneer Place are open. Holiday shoppers and other visitors are encouraged to check directly with retailers and other businesses to verify their status.
