Recycling old fridges saves enough power to run average home for 16 months
CRESCENT CITY, Calif.--Crescent City residents shut the door on energy waste in 2013 by joining with Pacific Power and getting serious about refrigerator recycling. With Pacific Power's "See ya later Refrigerator" program, Crescent City area customers gave the cold shoulder to 21 fridges and freezers during September and October.
"This is a fine, sustained effort and overall it is reducing energy use in Crescent City," said Monte Mendenhall, regional community manager. "Putting 21 old fridges out to pasture saves almost 8,900 kilowatt hours of electricity use. That's immediate and long term savings for these customers and it's enough to run the average home for 16 months."
Saving energy not only cuts customer's bills now, but reduces the need for costly new generating plants and transmission lines later. Participants also got $30 cash back for disconnecting the old, inefficient appliances. Now, depending on how inefficient the old fridge was, a customer might save as much as $150 per year in reduced energy costs.
Any and all Pacific Power residential customers are eligible for "See ya later, refrigerator(R)." Refrigerators or freezers must be in working condition and a minimum of 10 cubic feet in size (based on inside measurements) to qualify.
