On Friday, November 29, 2013 Clackamas Fire District #1 (CFD1) was officially awarded $1,919,556 in federal grant funding to increase fulltime staffing by hiring nine new firefighters. The SAFER Grant, from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will fully fund these nine firefighter salaries and benefits for a period of two years. The increase in firefighters will allow three community fire stations to enhance emergency response capabilities and inc rease firefighter safety while CFD1 responds to nearly 17,000 calls for service annually. "Not only will this grant give Clackamas County Fire District #1 the opportunity to hire nine new firefighters, it will also increase firefighter safety and create better response times for the entire community," said U.S. Senator Merkley. "This is great news for Clackamas County." The nine new firefighters are expected to be hired and serving in the community by the spring of 2014.
SAFER grants (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) assist fire departments by increasing the number of frontline firefighters.
