The community is invited to celebrate the holiday season at Beaverton's 10th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Open House on Friday, Dec. 6. The Holiday Open House begins at 5 p.m. inside Beaverton City Library (12375 SW 5th Street). Outdoor activities begin at 6 p.m. across the street in Beaverton City Pa rk followed by the tree lighting ceremony at 7 p.m.

"This holiday tradition helps bring our community together," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "I'd like to invite everyone to enjoy our growing celebration, bringing in the season with great music, family-friendly activities and lasting memories."

During the Holiday Open House, attendees will have a chance to visit with Santa, Mrs. Claus and helper elves, while listening to sounds of the holiday season from the Beaverton Community Band and the city staff choir. Children and their families can participate in activities, games and a holiday craft workshop. In addition, residents can learn more about city programs and upcoming events at several displays. Refreshments will be provided.

Beginning at 5:50 p.m., visitors can stroll down Candy Cane Lane to the tree lighting program, during which the Arts and Communication Magnet Academy choir, Leikarringen of Portland (Scandinavian dance) and Radio Disney will perform shortly before Mayor Doyle and Santa Claus light the tree at 7 p.m.

After the tree is lit, stroll to Broadway for the annual Downtown Holiday Showcase from 7 to 9 p.m. The celebration continues downtown with holiday treats, discounts and entertainment presented by the Beaverton Downtown Association. Visit www.DowntownBeaverton.org for details.

At 8 p.m., the Beaverton Civic Theatre presents "If It's Monday, This Must Be Christmas!" in the Beaverton City Library Auditorium. Tickets are $5 with a donation of a new, unwrapped toy or minimum $5. Otherwise, general admission is $15, $12 for students, seniors and groups, and $5 for children ten and younger. Beneficiaries include Beaverton's low-income youth as well as foster children in Washington County.

The 2013 City of Beaverton Tree Lighting and Holiday open house is presented by Radio Disney.

STREET CLOSURES
To ensure the safety of pedestrians, SW 5th Street between SW Hall Boulevard and SW Watson Avenue will be closed from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
