Tonight Sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting call on SW River Road south of Hillsboro. Two people were killed in an apparent murder suicide and a third person was shot and injured.
On Monday, May 27, 2013, at 6:26 p.m., Sheriff's deputies responded to reports that at least one person had been shot at 5355 SW River Road in unincorporated Washington County.
Deputies arrived and quickly entered the house at 5355 SW River Rd. They found two people deceased inside the home. Deputies then located a third man at a neighbor's house who had been shot. He was later transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Washington County homicide detectives were called out to investigate the incident. They identified the suspect as 61-year-old Kenneth Van Patten and the deceased victim as 56-year-old Melinda Van Patten. They lived in the house and had been married for decades. The other victim is 56-year-old Glen Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton was a roommate of the Van Patten's. It appears that Mr. Van Patten shot both his wife and their roommate and then shot himself.
Detectives are continuing to process the scene and investigate the shooting. It is unknown at this time how many rounds were fired or the exact sequence of events that transpired in the house. No further information will be available tonight.
