A caller contacted the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office to report Joanne Tyler, age 27, of Silverton, was overdue from a hiking trip. Volunteer search-and-rescue (SAR) crews located Ms. Tyler in a small cabin off the Hardy Creek trail around 7 this morning (Wednesday, May 29).

On Tuesday May 28, Joanne Tyler, age 27, from Silverton embarked on a day-hike off the Molalla Forest Road in Molalla at the Hardy Creek Trail (Milepost 3). She advised a friend where she would be hiking, and that it was only a day trip.

The friend tried, unsuccessfully to reach Ms. Tyler. After not hearing from her, the friend contacted the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office that evening around midnight.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team responded. A SAR operation was initiated in conjunction with Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue volunteers. They began a ground search around 4 a.m.

Searchers located Ms. Tyler in a small shelter known as Annie's Cabin in the forested area. She was safe.

Ms. Tyler had planned on a day hike, and had supplies to last a day. She also had a trail map. At one point in the hike, she was reportedly frightened by an animal, and then lost her trail map as daylight was beginning to fade. As it was dark and she was lost, she decided to spend the night in the shelter.

This website has information about the trail area and photos of the shelter where rescuers found Ms. Tyler:
