Media invited: Come watch 100-plus energetic kids
learn to conserve energy
How energy efficient can a 10-year-old be?
Find out at Adams Elementary School
WHEN: Friday, April 26, assembly starts at 2:15 p.m.
WHERE: Adams Elementary School, 723 S. 8th St., Yakima, Wash. 509-574-5100.
WHAT: A fast-paced assembly with games and fun videos, teaching about 110 students how to save energy. Be wattsmart, Begin at Home is sponsored by Pacific Power and presented by the National Energy Foundation.
WHY: Kids are just beginning to see that what they do has an impact. Be wattsmart Begin at Home expands on that message, according to a prominent education leader.
"Elementary students of today are the power consumers of tomorrow," said Steven L. VanAusdle, president of Walla Walla Community College, and member of Pacific Power's Regional Advisory Board: "In fact, with phones, games and other media, many kids are already consuming power. Be wattsmart, Begin at Home aims to raise awareness of how to conserve energy every day in small, but significant ways. Pacific Power has been sponsoring similar outreach programs to elementary school age children in Washington for more than a decade and it is working."
BACKGROUND: This is the first year that Pacific Power has partnered with the National Energy Foundation. Teachers who participate can get a $100 mini-grant to use in their classrooms. More material on how the program works will be available at the assembly.
Schools and teachers can still sign up to be part of the program during this school year. Contact Janet Hatch at janet@nef1.org or call 1-800-616-8326 with questions.
DETAILS: Reporters should check in at the main office and contact Hailey McCaffrey, lead teacher. Teachers have information on students who should not be photographed.
