(Portland, OR) -

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is proud to help present the (free!) 2013 Festival of the Birds, featuring live birds, games, bird-themed arts and crafts, and nature walks at PP&R's Sellwood Park and Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. Activities take place from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, May 11. Get up close to the birds, learn about their habitat, and see how birds differ from people with these free activities designed for young children, teens, and adults.

WHAT: 2013 Festival of the Birds
WHERE: Sellwood Park (SE 7th Ave & Miller St) and Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge (SE 7th Ave & Sellwood Blvd)
WHEN: Saturday, May 11, 9am-3pm.

Naturalists will lead free bird walks along the trails of Oaks Bottom to observe birds and compare with the counts from previous years' bird sightings. The guided walks take place all day on the half hour. Early birds can be seen during a free early morning walk at 7:30 AM walk by registering at www.portlandparks.org for class #398198. Bird walks at later hours do not require registration. Some of Portland's premier bird watchers, such as Mike Houck and Tom McAllister will lead walks later in the day.

Teen activities will begin at 10:30am at Sellwood Pool (7951 SE 7th Ave.) Chocolate tasting, birding, and active sports will liven up the morning for this age group.

Special events include an all-day display of art from 6th graders at Metropolitan Learning Center and students at Alameda Beaumont Child Care Center. Their work reflects the theme of a 1:00pm photographic presentation by Paul Bannick, author of The Owls and the Woodpeckers at the Sellwood Pool building at 7951 SE 7th Ave. Bannick, a Northwest wildlife photographer will explain the unique connection between the feeding behavior of woodpeckers and the need for nest cavities by owls. Feathers will fly at 11:00am when Danza Azteca performs their ritual dances in their ornately designed costumes covered in feathers.

Some food and birding supplies will be available for purchase. The free 2013 Festival of the Birds is made possible by Portland Parks & Recreation, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Sellwood Moreland Improvement League with participation by Audubon Society of Portland, Columbia Slough Watershed Council, Leach Botanic Garden, Johnson Creek Watershed Council, Friends of Portland Community Gardens, SOLVE, NePo Suet Company, Kallari Chocolate and Backyard Bird Shop.
