The Sandy Police Department is proud to announce successfully meeting all of the requirements for accreditation from the Oregon Accreditation Alliance (OAA). The OAA was established at the direction of the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP).
The process has been long, complicated and was originally started several years ago by then chief, Harold Skelton. Chief Skelton, with the help of the OAA Director, Joe Simmons, presented the idea to the Sandy City Council. That presentation was the catalyst to establishing OAA Accreditation as a council goal.
During the search for the next Chief of Police, the goal of achieving accreditation was described in the skills required by the new Chief of Police.
Shortly after being hired in April 2010, Chief Yamashita began drafting new policies that would be needed to achieve the goal of accreditation. Additionally, the construction of a new police facility in 2011 made the goal of accreditation possible.
Once the Sandy Police Department moved into their new facility, the accreditation process began in earnest. There are over 100 standards that must be met to achieve accreditation. Many of them require specific policy, written directives, procedures and practices. Once all of the standards were met, the department had to go through an onsite inspection, which they passed on March 26, 2013.
The inspector writes up his findings and forwards the report to the board which then awards the certification.
Chief Yamashita attended the OACP Annual Banquet on April 11th, receiving the certificate acknowledging the accreditation status.
A formal award of the certificate will be done during the May 6, 2013 City Council Meeting at 7:00pm.
