SICK SEA LION CALLING WEST LINN HOME FOR NOW
Posted: March 5th, 2013 1:54 PM

An ailing male sea lion has hauled himself up onto a rocky beach at the north end of Mary S Young Park. Community Service Officer Peggy Jones began looking into the matter on Monday March 4, 2013. She has been in contact with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife who have directed us to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. ODFW has been monitoring the animal for the past 5 days.
According to ODFW the sea lion, marked C742, is severely ill with no visible wounds. The sea lions weight looks normal and he appears to be quite old. At this time they are continuing to monitor him and advising people to stay away. According to the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network there is no option to rescue or rehabilitate these animals in Oregon and it is best to allow nature to take its course.
Sea Lions can transmit diseases and it is advised that all visitors to the park and waterway follow this advisory. Federal and State Laws Prohibit Touching, Feeding, or Disturbing Marine Mammals. Seals and Sea Lions often rest on or along Oregon beaches and waterways. Please stay at least 50 yards away from them, DO NOT pour water on seals or sea lions, DO NOT allow dogs to approach, and please DO NOT DISTURB the animal.
Further media inquiries should be made to Brian Gorman at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at 503-206-6399
