Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of Union County Sheriff's Office, arrested a man Wednesday morning driving a new $61,000 Chevrolet Camaro reported stolen earlier from a Baker City auto dealership. The arrest was greatly assisted by the vehicle's OnStar system which allowed the remote disabling of the car's engine reducing its power and preventing the driver from eluding police at high speeds.

According to Baker City Police Department, on March 6, 2013 at approximately 7:43 a.m., Baker City police responded to a reported burglary and vehicle theft at Baker Garage auto dealership. Responding officers noted forced entry was made into the building, allowing access into the showroom where a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro was stolen.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., OSP Trooper Grant Jackson and two Union County Sheriff's Office deputies set up westbound near milepost 274 after OnStar provided tracking information on the stolen vehicle to Union County 9-1-1 dispatch. The officers spotted the stolen vehicle where it took exit 273 and changed directions eastbound onto Interstate 84.

Because OnStar had remotely disabled the engine reducing its power, the trooper reported the car didn't exceed 30 mph before pulling over near milepost 274 where its lone occupant, JAMES D. REEDY, age 46, was taken into custody without further incident.

While in custody at the scene, REEDY had a medical problem and was taken by ambulance to Grand Ronde hospital in La Grande. REEDY was examined at the hospital and later released into OSP custody.

REEDY, who was residing in a Baker City motel, was lodged in the Union County Jail on the following charges:

* Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
* DUIIU
* Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle
* Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended

Questions regarding the vehicle theft and burglary investigation should be directed to Baker City Sergeant Kirk McCormick at (541) 524-2014 ext. 22.
