News Release from: Vancouver Police Dept.
VANCOUVER POLICE DEPARTMENT RECRUITING CITIZENS FOR NEXT NEIGHBORS ON WATCH ACADEMY
Posted: January 8th, 2013 2:03 PM
The Vancouver Police Department is accepting applications through January 24, 2013 for the next Neighbors On Watch (NOW) training academy. Over the past two years, NOW volunteers have conducted activities such as searching for a missing child, located 77 stolen automobiles, and helped police find an auto prowl suspect. These actions taken by your neighbors, turned community heroes, are possible thanks to the specialized training they took to become citizen patrol volunteers through NOW.
NOW volunteers patrol the city neighborhoods on foot, bike, or by vehicle and act as additional "eyes and ears" for the police department. The NOW program has 100 members and is a highly visible, non-confrontational crime prevention and detection program.
These citizen patrollers observe and report suspicious and criminal activity, patrol in pairs, help search for missing people, locate stolen vehicles, conduct speed surveys, and assist detectives with special projects. Volunteers receive specialized training in observation skills, police radio communications, crime detection and prevention, patrol procedures, first aid, CPR, and AED, among other relevant topics.
The Vancouver Police Department would like to have 300 community heroes in the NOW program. If you live in the city limits of Vancouver, are a U.S. citizen, can successfully pass a background investigation, and have four (4) hours a month to dedicate to public safety and crime prevention, this may be a great fit for you.
Contact Kelly Cheney, Vancouver Police volunteer coordinator, at (360) 487-7467, for more information on participating in this very successful community oriented policing program.
