SHERIFF'S OFFICE CO-HOSTS 'CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM' TRAINING FEB. 25 - MARCH 1 TO IMPROVE LAW-ENFORCEMENT ENCOUNTERS WITH MENTALLY ILL

In late February, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas County Behavioral Health and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will partner to host a five-day session of "Crisis Intervention Team" training to improve law-enforcement encounters with the mentally ill, aging, and drug- or alcohol-affected.
The course will be held Monday-Friday, Feb. 25 - March 1 at the Public Safety Training Center (12700 SE 82nd Ave., Clackamas, OR 97015). It is open to first responders, 911 dispatchers, and law-enforcement and fire personnel. Media interested in learning more about the program are invited to interview key participants.
Since February 2005, the Sheriff's Office has collaborated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and local mental-health agencies to build the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program. CIT's goal is to provide information, tools, and resources to enhance first-responder encounters with the emotionally disturbed -- in jail and on the street -- and reduce overall incarcerations and risk of injury or death.
Since 2005, the Sheriff's Office has provided CIT training to 205 of its own deputies and 212 from 54 other participating local, state and federal agencies.

CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM TRAINING OBJECTIVES:
- Provide information and resources to law-enforcement personnel who find themselves handling calls involving emotionally disturbed individuals
- Increase the ability of law enforcement to successfully manage an emotionally disturbed individual
- Reduce the number of inappropriate incarcerations involving people with mental illness
- Provide relief to an overburdened criminal justice system
- Develop/implement a treatment response system for persons experiencing emotional or mental crises
- Develop/sustain officer interest and involvement on calls involving emotionally disturbed individuals
- Continue to develop relationships between mental health officials, law enforcement, and mentally ill individuals and their families
