PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE EXTINGUISHES FURNACE FIRE AT THE MARRIOTT
Posted: January 4th, 2013 5:58 PM
At 3:55 pm Portland Fire & Rescue responded to report of a furnace overheating at the Marriott at 1401 SW Naito Parkway. The crew from Engine 4 (Portland State University) arrived at 4:00 pm. They found smoke on two levels and immediately called for additional resources. At 4:06 pm a commercial fire was dispatched and a total of 7 engines, 3 trucks, 3 chiefs and a heavy squad responded to the scene.
"A fire at a location like this gets a very specific type and amount of resources because of the speed at which fire can spread and the potential for a large amount of occupants." Said Public Information Officer AJ Schaffer.
Engine 4 quickly located and extinguished embers in the ductwork of a furnace on the 1st sub-level before the fire could spread through the duct system. Due to the speed of fire crews, no evacuations were needed. The fire was declared under control at 4:26 pm. 2 engines, 2 trucks and the heavy squad remained on scene to remove smoke from the building on the 1st sub-level and the lobby. Fire crews used ventilation fans and the building exhaust system in order to accomplish this task.
Additional information will be given as it becomes available.
