Posted: January 17th, 2013 8:49 AM
An Oakridge-area man is facing DUII and other charges following a Wednesday night two-vehicle injury crash along Highway 58 east of Pleasant Hill. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.
On January 16, 2013 at approximately 7:59 p.m., a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban driven by KENNETH W. HAYES, age 68, from Oakridge, was eastbound on Highway 58 near milepost 11 when it traveled across the centerline and collided head-on with a 2001 Peterbuilt truck pulling a semi-trailer loaded with lettuce.
HAYES and the truck's operator, WILFRIDO GOMEZ, age 52, from San Bernardino, California, were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with non-life threatening injuries. GOMEZ was driving for California Produce. No lettuce spilled as a result of the crash.
OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command office responded and the initial investigation led OSP to cite HAYES to appear in Lane County Circuit Court for DUII, Reckless Driving, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. Trooper Todd Cutsforth is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by fire departments from Springfield, Lowell, Pleasant Hill and Dexter. ODOT also responded to assist as the highway was blocked in both directions for about one hour.
