CCSO: SEARCH FOR MISSING FISHERMAN ON SANDY RIVER - SUSPENDED

On January 14th 2013 at 10:04 a.m. the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received a call via 911 that a man had slipped and fallen into the Sandy River near the old Marmot Dam, approximately 6 miles east of Sandy, Oregon. The report came from his friend who had seen him fall into the water and not re-surface.
Searchers have identified the missing man as Joseph Arnold Deseranno, age 18, of Milwaukie. Mr. Deseranno and a friend had driven to the location earlier this morning to fish for Steelhead. Mr. Deseranno attempted to wade across the Sandy River when he slipped and fell into the water. He was wearing hip-waders and a camouflage coat. Mr. Deseranno was not wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) as recommended.
The Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium, a team of skilled water rescue personnel including members of the Hoodland Fire dept., Sandy Fire Dept. Clackamas Fire District 1, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, Boring Fire Dept., and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, assisted by American Medical Response, responded to the Sandy River near the location of the old Marmot Dam.
Searchers reported the Sandy River was relatively clear but running very fast through this section. The water temperature was approximately 35 degrees and the air temperature was 27 degrees. The river banks were covered in ice. Cloud cover and falling snow prevented air support from CCSO and the National Guard from flying the area. Members of the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium diligently searched the banks of the Sandy River and deployed swimmers, rope teams, rescue teams and rafts to search the waterway. Mr. Desranno was not found.
The search continued for four and a half hours in treacherous conditions. At 2:30 p.m. the search was suspended due to safety concerns for the rescue personnel. Searchers will return to the area tomorrow, weather permitting, to resume looking for Mr. Deseranno.
