Posted: December 4th, 2012 11:43 AM

On November 28, 2012, Joseph T Schesso, 35, of Vancouver, was sentenced to 40 months in state prison after pleading guilty to Attempted Child Molestation in the First Degree, a felony sex crime. This sentencing was the culmination of an investigation that began in the fall of 2009, when it was discovered that images of children being sexually exploited were obtained from an IP address that returned to Schesso's then-residence, in Vancouver.

In June of 2010, detectives served a search warrant at Schesso's home and several pieces of digital evidence were seized to be forensically examined by the Vancouver Police/Clark County Sheriff's Office Digital Evidence Cybercrimes Unit (DECU). During the course of that analysis, several images were discovered that were later confirmed to be depictions of Schesso sexually abusing a known juvenile female.

Upon completion of his prison sentence, Schesso will be required to register as a sex offender and will have lifetime supervision through the Washington State Department of Corrections.

DECU is a 9 person unit comprised of detectives and computer forensic examiners whose responsibilities include investigating a variety of cyber-related crimes that involve children, including crimes related to depictions of images of children being sexually exploited. To date, DECU has investigated 95 such complaints this year, and has served about 2 dozen search warrants related to child being sexually exploited, all within Clark County.
