On the evening Of December 8th just after 5:30pm, Firefighters from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue (FGF&R) were alerted to a barn fire located at 7845 SW Spring Hill Road; this is located south of Forest Grove. Firefighters arrived approximately 10 minutes after being dispatched to find a metal sided barn with heavy fire showing out of the rear of it. Fire crews used multiple hose lines to extinguish the flames from the outside of the barn, as it was too unsafe to enter the structure due to the roof collapsing. Fire crews were able to stop the flames in less than ten minutes. But took firefighters about an hour putting out hot spots in hay that was stored in the barn, eventually the land owner brought in a tractor and helped remove the large amount of hay to allow better extinguishment.
Due to the location being rural farmland and outside a municipal water system, water tenders were brought to the scene to help supply fire attack hose lines. Thanks to quick thinking neighbors, 10 cows that were housed in the barn were let out as the flames grew. Those 10 cows were scared and ended up about 1/4 mile away, but were able to be gathered by other neighbors and are being kept at neighbor's barn for the night.
Firefighters were on scene for just over two hours extinguishing hot spots. The barn, built around 1939, is considered a complete loss. At this time the cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries on scene and no livestock was lost.
FGF&R was assisted on scene by Cornelius Fire Dept, Gaston Fire District and Hillsboro Fire & Rescue.
