Don't let cold snap zap your electric bill
Pacific Power offers tips for being wattsmart, saving energy and money
PORTLAND, Ore. - Getting cozy warm inside with the big screen TV, watching holiday movies, lights illuminating your seasonal décor and something tasty cooking in the oven doesn't have to send your power usage over the river and through the woods.
With the energy-intensive heating season and holiday lighting both upon us, Pacific Power wants to remind customers they can still save energy--and their money--during winter. Give yourself the gift of being wattsmart.
Here are some low-cost tips you can use today:
* 10 x 10 rule: Set your thermostat as low as comfortable, aim for 68 degrees. When you are asleep or out of the house, lower the temperature by another 10 degrees and this will reduce your energy usage by about 10 percent.
* Cover drafty windows with a heavy duty, clear plastic sheet on the inside of window frames during winter months.
* Set your water heater to 120 degrees and drain it annually.
* Wash your clothes in cold water and wash only full loads.
* Completely fill your dishwasher before running and air dry your dishes instead of using the dishwasher's drying cycle.
* Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs in fixtures that you have on at least three hours a day. These bulbs use one quarter the energy of traditional bulbs.
* Set your refrigerator temps between 37 and 40 degrees and your freezer at 0 degrees.
* Unplug old refrigerators in garages or basements that might be used as storage, but are inefficient and not fully utilized. Better yet, have your old refrigerator or freezer picked up for proper recycling and receive a cash incentive. Call 1-866-444-8907 to schedule a free pick up.
* Improve your home's heating and cooling systems by cleaning or replacing furnace filters and scheduling routine system maintenance to help air flow through the system more efficiently.
