On Tuesday December 4, 2012 at approximately 6:53 pm, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received a call from a concerned mother that her 48 year old daughter, Tauna Santas was suicidal. The mother reported that her daughter had called her saying that she was going to jump into the Molalla River and kill herself. Sheriff's Deputies immediately began to search for her.
At approximately 7:05 pm, Deputy Corey Saffer stopped to check a vehicle parked at Wagon Wheel Park 28100 S HWY 213 Molalla. He recognized the vehicle as belonging to Ms. Santas and got out to investigate. Deputy Saffer heard a noise down by the river and arrived in time to see Ms. Santas jump into the raging Moalla River.
Deputy Saffer called for additional assistance and began to run down the banks of the river to attempt to find her. Deputy Saffer spotted the woman clinging to some trees at the edge of the river. He began to talk with her while trying to figure out how to rescue her.
An Officer from the Molalla Police Department arrived to assist and Deputy Saffer instructed him to retrieve a rope from the trunk of his patrol car. The Officer brought Deputy Saffer the rope and he made it into a loop. Deputy Saffer was able to get the loop over the woman's head and cinch it in place on her torso. He then looped the rope around his waist and held on until members of the River Rescue Team arrived.
While they were waiting, Deputy Saffer continued to talk to Ms. Santas and she told him she did not want to die anymore. He encouraged her and kept her talking until the she was pulled out of the river.
Members from Molalla Fire Department Clackamas Fire District #1 and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue arrived and were able to pull Ms. Santas out of the river. She was transported to Portland Adventist Hospital for treatment. Her status is unknown at this time.
