Posted: November 26th, 2012 10:49 AM

The Vancouver Police Department, in partnership with Clark County's Medications Take Back Program, has added a new collection site for unwanted controlled substances. Controlled substances include prescription medications such as painkillers and tranquilizers.

Residents are now able to safely dispose of unwanted or outdated controlled substances at the Vancouver Police Department's West Precinct, 2800 Stapleton Road, Vancouver. Unwanted medications can be dropped off at the West Precinct during normal office hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5p.m. (except holidays). The medication drop station has self sealing bags and instructions on the proper disposal of mediations into the drop box. Only pills may be disposed of, liquids and needles are NOT accepted.

This Vancouver Police Department West Precinct joins eight existing law enforcement precincts and stations around the county in collecting unwanted controlled substances.

Controlled substances taken to any law enforcement collection site must be in an original, sealed container and have all patient information either removed or marked out. Qualifying medications are collected Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations:

Battle Ground Police Department
507 S.W. First St., Battle Ground

Camas Police Department
2100 N.E. Third Ave., Camas

The Medications Take Back Program began in 2003 as a partnership between Clark County and local pharmacies to safely dispose of medications that are unwanted or outdated. Proper drug disposal has emerged as a leading environmental issue.

Non-controlled substances, such as over-the-counter medications, may be disposed of at:
* Participating pharmacies.
* Your doctor's office. Call first to make sure your doctor will accept unwanted
medications for safe disposal.
* A household hazardous waste collection facility or event.
