The Oregon State Police (OSP) Missing Children's Clearinghouse received a $5,000 grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund to purchase Child ID Kits which are useful to police in the event a child becomes missing.
"Our sincere thanks go to the Siletz Tribe for this generous grant that will help purchase much-needed Child ID Kits which are distributed free to anyone who requests," said Julie Willard, OSP Missing Children/Persons Program Manager. The donation was presented by Cheryl Lane and Jim White, Advisory Board Members for the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund, to Willard and OSP Sergeant Gregg Withers.
The ID Complete Child Identification and DNA kits are a proactive method to be prepared in case your child ever becomes missing. Each kit takes only a few minutes to fill out, are non-intrusive and contain valuable personal and medical information including a place for a photograph, DNA cheek swab sample, fingerprints (self-inking strip included), and a physical description. Once completed, the kit can be sealed in a zip lock bag and kept in an easily accessible, safe place.
Since 1999, over 225,000 ID kits, which are available in English and Spanish, have been distributed by the OSP Missing Children Clearinghouse in Oregon. The Child Complete Identification and DNA kits are not a budgeted item of the Oregon State Police, so the ability to purchase and distribute the kits heavily relies on generous donations such as that provided by the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund.
There are approximately 800 kids under the age of 18 listed in LEDS/NCIC as missing in Oregon. Nationally, there are 800,000 children - about 2,000 every day - reported missing each year. About 92 percent are runaways, 5 percent are victims of custodial interference, and the remaining is missing under unknown circumstances.

Created by the Oregon legislature in 1989, the mission of the OSP Missing Children Clearinghouse is to receive and distribute information on missing children to local law enforcement agencies, school districts, state and federal agencies, and the public. One of the functions of the Clearinghouse is to obtain funds for the purchase of Child ID Kits for distribution in Oregon.
