Hillsboro Fire Department honored a Lake Oswego woman Tuesday night for saving the life of a man stricken by an apparent heart attack on September 18th. Theresa Whalen was visiting her mother in the Orenco neighborhood of Hillsboro when she spotted a man slumped to the ground. Two teens were attempting to notify 9-1-1 of the location, but needed assistance with the street address. Whalen jumped from her car, notified the 9-1-1 dispatcher of the correct address and began administering Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. When Hillsboro firefighter/paramedics arrived, they took over patient care and used their external heart defibrillator to return the patient's heartbeat to a normal rhythm. When the patient left the hospital on September 25th, doctors said he suffered no neurological deficits from his brush with death. The patient's name is not being released due to patient privacy laws.
"This is a perfect example of the partnership of citizen bystanders and emergency responders in saving lives." said Hillsboro Fire Administrative Chief Scott Malone, who assisted Mayor Jerry Willey in presenting the lifesaver award. "With the quick application of C-P-R, the patient has a far greater chance of survival that waiting for our crews to respond even though we're just minutes away," Chief Malone added.
In an effort to increase the number of area citizens certified in C-P-R, Hillsboro Fire Department will hold a class on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the Cherry Lane Fire Station #6 located at 21880 NW Cherry Lane. The cost of the 5-hour class is $40 and covers C-P-R, basic first aid and automatic external defibrillators. Credit cards will be accepted. You must preregister by calling Shauna Schmidlin at 503-681-3901.
